Semaglutide and Tirzepatide: What are they?

Semaglutide (sold under the brand name Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus) and Tirzepatide (sold under the brand name Mounjaro) are medications used for treatment of type 2 diabetes. They are usually prescribed in conjunction with diet and exercise to improve a patient’s glycemic control in their bloodstream by lowering appetite and slowing down digestion. In recent years, they have also been indicated for long term weight management for patients with obesity or patients who are overweight with at least one comorbidity. Although less effective compared to bariatric surgery, Semaglutide and Tirzepatide both offer a safer, easier, and more effective solution to medical weight management than traditional weight loss pills and other anti-obesity treatments. Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are both prescription medications and require a licensed medical doctor’s evaluation before a patient starts his or her treatment. Most frequently they are offered as a subcutaneous injection once a week, administered by either the patient or by a medical professional.

What are the side effects of Semaglutide and Tirzepatide?

While side effects may vary from individuals, the most common side effects include:

• Abdominal Pain

• Constipation

Other less common side effects may include:

• Kidney problems

• Allergic reactions

• Hypoglycemia

• Pancreatitis
