Upper Respiratory Infections

Call/Text: 646-306-0419

From a stuffy nose or a sore throat to extreme fatigue accompanied with fevers and chills, we have all experienced symptoms associated with an acute upper respiratory infection (URI). These infections range from mild and minimally inconvenient to severe and extremely debilitating. Signs you might be having an acute upper respiratory infection include the following:

  • Sore Throat

  • Runny Nose/Congestion

  • Fever/Chills

  • Cough

  • Facial/Ear Pain

  • Fatigue

  • Headaches

The most typical upper respiratory infections include an infection of the sinuses (sinusitis), an infection of the larynx (laryngitis), and an infection of the bronchial tubes (bronchitis), among many other less common forms of URI’s.

Other Causes

Moderate to Severe Allergy: What started out as seasonal allergy can often cause an accumulation of mucus, allowing viruses and bacterias to inhabit, and results in an URI.

Chronic Conditions: Conditions such as Chronic Lyme Disease, Autoantibody Deficiencies (IgG, IgA, IgE etc.), Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) etc can weaken our natural immune system and cause chronic and frequent URI’s.

Common Causes

Bacteria: Type A Streptococcus (Strep Throat), Diphtheria, Gonorrhea, Chlamydia etc

Virus: Influenza (Flu), Adenovirus, Rhinovirus, hMPV, Parainfluenza, Coronavirus, Coxsackievirus (Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease), Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) etc

Think it will get better on its own? Well, only sometimes.

As we can see, there are many moving parts to the equation of upper respiratory infections. Often times, they are not mutually exclusive. For example, a patient can suffer from common cold while also suffering from seasonal allergies. If the patient does not address the illness promptly, it is entirely possible for him/her to develop a sinus infection subsequently after a week or so. Therefore, while sometimes your symptoms resolve on their own in a few days, it is important to seek help from a doctor when 1) you are not sure whether your symptoms are from an allergy, a virus, or a bacteria, or 2) when your symptoms have not gotten better and/or are getting worse, or 3) when you have a history of chronic infections which leads to pneumonia and hospitalizations.
